Carolyn Stewart wins °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ tartan design competition

Carolyn Stewart ’17, a major from Chesterfield, Missouri, won the °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ Design Competition.
The competition, sponsored by the , challenged students to design an innovative tartan plaid using the University’s colors. Stewart’s design was one of six entries.
“This was a unique opportunity because it will be visible for years to come,” Stewart said. “It would be great to come back here in a few years and see it around campus.”
The winning design will be sent to the Scottish Register of Tartans in Edinburgh, Scotland to be authenticated. Merchandise with the tartan will be available through the University bookstore and online in the fall.
Annie Drummond ’17, a major from Lake St. Louis, Missouri, coordinated the competition as part of her ongoing scholarly work for the .
“This was an awesome learning experience because I learned about things that I’ll be working on later in life,” she said. “I wanted to do a project that would make a difference and I realized this would leave a legacy behind.”
Stewart created her design to represent °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ’s past and present. Red was chosen as a tribute to the University’s past. It also represents the present, evidenced by school pride at the Red Sea section of sporting events and in the Rise of the Red campaign by the Student Senate. The color gray represents °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ Hall, it’s famous gargoyles, and the school’s mascot. She also made the black thread count 18 to represent Greek life on °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ’s campus. The first place award is $500.
Tamie Yost, a major from Peoria, received second place and $300. Third place and $200 was awarded to Kelly Beal, a hospitality leadership major from Peoria.
