The °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ Speech Team will host the 2014 George Armstrong Heart of Illinois High School Invitational December 5-6. Twenty-three high schools with approximately 350 high school students, coaches, and judges will be attending from 8 different states including: California, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Ohio.
Additionally, 14 students from 6 states will be competing in the Jay Janssen Oratorical Contest. Through the generosity of alumni Jay Janssen ’59 and °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ, these students will be competing for °®¶¹´«Ã½ÊÓƵ scholarships. Awards are given to the top three contestants: 1st place $15,000, 2nd place $13,000, and 3rd place $12,000.
Speech Team Director of Forensics Ken Young said the tournament blends the Illinois high school forensics community with a college forensics environment.
“The unique combination of those two makes the Armstrong tournament different from any other high school tournament in the nation,” Young said.
