Biography
Burton is from the Midwest, where she grew up in Indiana and received her B.S. in Psychology from Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!) before moving across the country to Spokane, Washington to complete her M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Gonzaga University! Dr. Burton moved back to Indiana and was a Professional School Counselor at High School. In that experience she grew to love the field and work of school counseling even more and the importance of advocacy for the school counselor role. She pursued her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Idaho State University before joining 爱豆传媒视频 as an Assistant Professor. She has professional counseling experience working with kids, teens, young adults, and families in K-12 settings both as a clinical mental health counselor and as a school counselor. She primarily enjoys utilizing creative interventions such as art, play, and sand tray techniques.
Teaching
In the classroom Dr. Burton tries to provide a welcoming and authentic space. As an instructor she focuses on relationships with students and how they connect with the material through emotions and personally as a developing counselor. In each class there are many ways of learning through discussion, media and interactive activities to meet each learning style.
Scholarship
Dr. Burton鈥檚 scholarly work focuses on disabilities in counselor education and how to prepare both counselors and programs to work with individuals with disabilities. Her most recent research was studying how counselor education programs respond and accommodate students who experience a medical emergency while enrolled in their program. Other research and presentations include the use of technology for school counselors and supervision in school counseling.
